SURREY SCHOOLS SUCCESS

Having qualified through their performances at the Sutton Schools Championships, several JFS runners competed in the Surrey Schools Championships at Reigate on Saturday.

Though representing Sutton, they were of course also representing John Fisher so well done to all who ran

Ricky Lutakome won the U17 race - his performance has been described as 'wow' as he ran with the pack until the final km before leaving them all for dead

Ryan Galvin finished 10th, Alex Galvin 21st having fallen over at the start apparently. The Sutton team finished 2nd overall.

In the U13 race Alfie Smith finished 11th, Freddie Georgious 58th as the Sutton team finished 9th out of 10 district teams.

HABS RELAY REPORT

Firstly apologies for the lateness of this report!

The JFS XC squad travelled to Haberdasher Aske's School in Hertfordshire around the M25 in good spirits following recent results, but without Harry Smith who had broken his arm following a Sedgeway incident that shall not be mentioned, and a couple of runners who were carrying injuries of one sort or another.

This event is very enjoyable and asks for a relay team with a runner from Year 7,8,9,10,11 and a 6th Former. The runners can run in any order and so whilst the overall result should be the same - whatever 6 runners run the quickest combined, where to allow your best runners the best chance of running their best is the key...or something like that.

It was decided that the JFS A&B Teams would line up in age order, with the younger age groups hopefully setting things up nicely for the seniors to accelerate towards the end.

Time would tell if this would work

The course is tough, a mixture of wood, track and then a last dash down a path. The boys run around a lake and the conditions, though not as freezing as last year, were still cold. The course was however very muddy. It was 2 miles long and would be a testing event!

The B Team

Leg 1: Freddie Georgiou Year 7 (11.22)

Leg 2:Joseph Roberts (Year 7 but running as a Year 8) (13.20) There is no photo of Joe, who injured himself during his lap and the photographer was more interested in finding out how he was as he ran past!

Leg 3: Jude Watson Year 9 (12.11)

Leg 4: Jacob Jones Year 10 (10.28)

Leg 5: Alex Galvin Year 11 (9.51)

Leg 6: Robert Spalding 6th Form (9.42)

The A Team

Leg 1: Alfie Smith Year 7 (10.41) (6th fastest yr 7)

Leg 2: Peter Edwards Year 8 (11.17)

Leg 3: Luca Gerges Year 8 running as Year 9 (11.41)

Leg 4: Gianluca Ercolano Year 10 (10.09)

Leg 5: Ricky Lutakome  Year 11 (8.28) (fastest leg overall in race)

Leg 6: Ryan Galvin Year 11 running as a 6th Former (9.28)

So in conclusion, the A Team finished in 8th place, and the B Team in 30th out of a total of 33 teams.

This was a high quality event so well done to all runners involved. Special mention to Joe Roberts who injured himself on the course, Alex Galvin who ran despite carrying a knock from the Knole and Alfie who ran a great time. Ricky once again ran a superb leg to carry off the fastest lap award

The boys enjoyed their chicken kebab, potato wedges and beans

Just to prove how tough the XC courses are, here is some serious damage!

Also, a final mention to the crowd who loved every minute!

Parkrun for Juniors/Inters

Saturday 23rd January
Roundshaw 5k Time Trial

With no Junior XC meet so far, this weekend sees the team meet at the Sports Pavilion at Plough Lane to walk the short distance to the start of the Roundshaw 5k Parkrun.

There are thousands of these 5k (3.1 miles) races every Saturday all across the UK. It is a public event open to anyone and is free to enter. Therefore is any parents or siblings want to run this Saturday you are more than welcome.

The race is 2 laps of the old airfield behind our playing fields and the boys will be timed and the results are published later that day.

Information can be found at www.parkrun.org.uk/roundshaw/

We will meet at the Pavilion at 8.15 as the race begins at 9.00. If you want to meet us at the start of the race itself, details are on the link above, but basically the start is near to the Battle of Britain Memorial on Purley Way.

If you have never run a Parkrun you will need to register before the race online. You will then have to print off a barcode which you carry in your pocket when running. This is then used to link the time to the runner.

I will be available in Room 1 (The ICT room) Friday lunchtime for any runners who need to register and print off their details.

A TEAM   15th (4TH STATE SCHOOL)

43 teams
300 runners

A fantastic performance by the JFS XC runners on Saturday saw some outstanding individual performance, but most importantly a great team performance with every runner, barring injury, improving on previous performances and exceeded personal targets.

As usual there was a noticeable frisson in the air as the start time approached. Captain Spalding had driven his BMW behind the severely speed restricted minibus the whole route in order to return in time to batter some sausages, and he led the warm-up, despite the 4 Year 11 runners being 15 minutes behind everyone else.

They remained 15 minutes behind as they struggled to put spikes and numbers on with time fast running out.

The start saw the impressive 300 runners itching to begin, and with no sighting of David Beckham at Knole for a second time this season all focused on the race ahead, a hard 10k with 4 long hills and a firm course with muddy parts.

The competition would be extremely tough - this race is in effect the National Championships with some of the very best runners in the country competing.

With Mr Fell on the course and Miss Tomes at the finish, alongside the JFS support team of Mr & Mrs Galvin the boys were well supported and there was a lot to cheer.

However captain Spalding had to drop out early due to illness which was in no way related to the previous 12 hours, and when Alex Galvin injured his leg and was forced to limp around severely restricted that saw 2 of the 'big guns' out of the reckoning.

The other runners stepped up however and the results are above.

Ricky continued his stunning form and improved massively on his 2015 performance. A brilliant time and with 2 years to go he must be eyeing up medals in the future.

Ryan Galvin also saw his time improve dramatically and to finish 51st was a great result.

Massive congratulations must go to Year 9 Harry Smith who ran the 10k in under 40 minutes and finished 123rd - he has remember 4 more attempts at this race!

Fabien Daburn was brilliant and also finished under 40 minutes in a great position - his best run of the season

Gianluca Ercolano and Jacob Jones both ran extremely well, exceeding their given targets with ease, and with Alex bravely finishing the course despite his injury it was left to McAllister and Halfacre to also put in superb shifts with very good times.

So whilst the plaudits may come Ricky's way, and thoroughly deserving of them he will be, this was a great team effort. Without the injuries to Spalding and Alex Galvin a top 10 finish would have been well within reach.

Well done to all involved

ps sorry for the lack of photo's - issues with batteries!
