Cross–Country continues to be a successful sport at John
Fisher, with the full squad of 40 runners from Year 7s to Year 13s, and
International Standard to Beginner.
The Junior team - Year 7 & 8 - have all run with great
heart and determination. Ebuka, Matt Conway, John Hilario and Paul Hewitt have
all run well from Year 8, with Zack Johnson-Alleyne showing fantastic potential
from amongst the Year 7 runners. The best showing was at Charterhouse where 2nd
place was secured and it was very pleasing to see so many personal bests at
local Parkruns.
The Inters, Years 9 & 10, have all ran well, and often
run in senior competitions. Success at Charterhouse and Lancing College both
highlights, with Freddy Georgiou, Alfie Smith, Joe Conroy and Peter Edwards
especially all improving and showing fantastic potential.
The Senior team has once again been extremely successful,
competing in major competitions against the powerhouses of school cross
country. Year 11 Harry Smith has proved himself against older athletes, and Joe
Logue and Malachi Messette have all made the step up.
Star runner Ricky
Lutakome has been supported brilliantly by the Galvin twins, Jacob Jones and
Gianluca Ercolano this year. Ricky has been in sparkling form so far this
season, beating course records almost everywhere he runs, as well as becoming
the first John Fisher winner of the Kings Trophy since 1985.
Last weekend Ricky represented England U20 – he is still 2 years young for this age
group - in an International Cross Country Meeting in Spain where he
finished 6th overall, and has been selected for GB U20 team for a
match against Europe and USA in Edinburgh on 13 January.
Ricky is an example to his fellow team runners and everyone
in this hall from that hard work and commitment can bring success.
The runner of the term however, goes to an athlete whose
improvement has astonished his teammates and coaches and who now regularly runs
in the Senior Teams despite only being in Year 9 – Freddy Georgiou
