Parkrun on Saturday

Saturday 15th October
Roundshaw 5k Time Trial

Following recent cancellations, this weekend sees the team meet at the School Sports Pavilion at Plough Lane to walk the short distance to the start of the Roundshaw 5k Parkrun.

There are thousands of these 5k (3.1 miles) races every Saturday all across the UK and wider world – it has become a running phenomenon. It is a public event open to anyone and is free to enter. Therefore, if any parents or siblings want to run this Saturday you are more than welcome.

The race is 2 laps of the old airfield behind our playing fields and the boys will be timed and the results are published later that day on the website.

The distance will be a challenge to a lot of our runners, especially the younger age groups, but running in a public race has always been an enjoyable experience and the more miles in the legs the better!

Information can be found at www.parkrun.org.uk/roundshaw/

We will meet at the Pavilion at 8.15 as the race begins at 9.00. If you want to meet us at the start of the race itself, details are on the link above, but basically the start is near to the Battle of Britain Memorial on Purley Way.

If you have never run a Parkrun you will need to register before the race online. You will then have to print off a barcode which you carry in your pocket when running. This is then used to link the time to the runner.

I will be available in Room 1 (The ICT room) Friday lunchtime for any runners who need to register and print off their details.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DAY ON THE COMMON

Wednesday 5th October saw the Senior Squad travel to Wimbledon Common for the prestigious Kings Trophy.

This is an extremely prestigious event which draws all of the big guns of school XC, including the 2 top schools in the country St.Albans and Judd.

A 5th place finish last year was fantastic, but Ricky Lutakome also found himself mis-directed along with several other front-runners by an errant steward and so was denied the chance to compete for the medals. He was keen for revenge!

The weather was perfect, if the parking of the minibus was not, and unusually we arrived in plenty of time for the start.

The course is a 4.5 miles mixed terrain with woodland and open field, it included a water feature around half way around, and the added danger of flying golf balls!

Alfie Smith, currently a Year 8 had been picked to see how he did over the longer distance, he would as it turns out have a fantastic race.

The results are below with the 2015 times in brackets

    2 Lutakome  25.04

     35 Ercolano  28.45 (2015 - 31.06)

     39 Wells  29.02

     47 Galvin A  29.22 (29.33)

     52 Jones  29.51 (31.11)

    107 Halfacre O  33.13

    114 Halfacre J  34.17 (35.42)

    138 Hodgson  38.42

                            155 runners

                         21 teams

Team Result:
   6th   A Team
   17th  B Team   (4th B team)

Some fantastic performances put in by all the runners

Well done Ricky on finishing 2nd, close to being the first JFS student to win this race since 1985 - next year maybe!

Gianluca showed his summer practice has paid off by storming into the 2nd Fisher finisher

Alfie Smith defied all pre-race expectations to finish in the top 6 JFS finishers and thus A Team with a great time (he is 5 years younger than some of the runners!)

Unfortunately Ryan was running a strong race before injury got the better of him

Below are some photos of the day!

Free Weekend

This weekend sees a gap in the fixture list, but I would urge all runners to take the chance to go on a training run themselves

Next Wednesday sees the Seniors run the challenging 4.5miles King's College Course, and next Saturday sees a return to Oxted for a League race

HOME RACE RESULTS!

Our home league fixture saw a gloriously sunny morning perfect for running. Three local schools were able to attend – Oxted, Trinity and Tiffin. The junior race was very competitive with 48 runners, many of them year 7 getting used to race tactics and a distance of up to 2 miles. They looked very impressive on the start line on the old Croydon airport with fantastic views out over the London Basin as far as Hampstead Heath. Alfie Smith led the junior team home to finish in 2nd place, one better than last week. All our junior runners aquitted themselves well and hopefully should be feeling a bit fitter now. Well done to Leo Ostinello for being our first year 7 home in 14th place.

The smaller inter and senior teams started their races together, but split after 800m to run different distances. Harry Smith ran a strong race to finish a close 2nd to an impressive Oxted runner. Most of Harry’s team mates have moved up an age group this year and found the extra distance challenging so early on in the season. It will get easier lads!

The senior team was a bit depleted as the Galvins are competing in a tough triathlon this weekend – we hope that it went well, especially as you know that your level of fitness still has some way to go! Captain Sean was too ill to run, but gamely turned up to help out at the finish. Ricky was the first senior in, but would readily admit to being under no pressure at all and appeared to treat the event as a bit of a training run. We can’t blame him for doing that. Well done to our new runner Finlay Wells  - he should be very pleased with his 3rd place and will possibly make our A team selection more difficult this year – a good problem to have! Year 11s Gianluca and Jacob made up the scoring team today as the senior team remains unbeaten in the league. Keep up the training – 4.5miles over the Kings Trophy course on Oct 5th is a long way if you are not fit ….

Many thanks to Mr O’Halloran and Francis for haring and marking the course today and also to Ms Drozd for helping with the timekeeping.
