2 POINTS 2 FAR

JFS fell an agonizing 2 points short of becoming Sutton Schools XC Champions as Sutton Grammar claimed the title on the last Wednesday of last half-term.

The conditions were dreadful - rain, mud...perfect for Cross Country!

The usual shenanigans with runners being ill, deciding they didn't want to run on the day etc led to a very stressful morning for Mr Fell but eventually Sutton Grammar's sports ground on Northey Avenue saw some excellent running from our runners.

The course was as usual a good combination of field, forest and hill but also good for running some fast times. That is of the weather conditions hadn't made the ground wet and slippery!

It was hugely impressive that no one grumbled or complained about the rain and all gave it their all.

Picture to follow!

HOME RELAY DRAWS THE CROWDS

With no Year 7 rugby fixtures and a home fixture that allowed for a lay-in for once, bumper numbers took part in this League Relay Fixture at Plough Lane on Saturday.

I slightly altered course kept the route within the school fields and allowed excellent viewing for all the spectators and competitors. The course was almost exactly 1 mile, although it was heavy under foot and a little windy which meant it felt longer.

Tiffin and Oxted had bought teams

The Juniors fielded 5 teams which was a fantastic effort, below are the results and times

So not fantastic in terms of finishing positions, but fantastic that 20 runners represented the school

Special mention to Alfie Smith who struggled through with a major stitch half-way around. Also Peter Edwards put in a superb sprint finish to be pipped at the line for 3rd place. Ryan O'Sullivan also ran his leg in a great time despite a huge bruise on his thigh from the previous afternoon's rugby.

The Inters did very well with only 1 Oxted side to run against who ended up winning.

A great first leg from Gianluca Ercolano, and special mention to Joseph Logue who ran having only just recovered from a chest infection and 'left it all on the field'

The Seniors continued on their merry way, winning once again,

Some incredible times recorded, especially by Ricky, and well done John Erne who beat both Galvin twins. A great leg also by Sean McAllister who showed his class after his last showing!

WELL DONE TO ALL RUNNERS!

SILVER SUCCESS AT CHARTERHOUSE

The XC team travelled to picturesque Godalming on Saturday for the much anticipated Charterhouse Meet. This famous private school always offers a great welcome and a challenging course, including the infamous 'Charterhouse Hill' - 128 metres of pain that rises 85 ft.  Once tried - never forgotten! The course was proper cross-country with forest, path, grass, roots and mud to contend with

The Inters and Seniors have to run the course - plus the hill - twice!

Anyhow, the Junior Team performed very well on the 2 mile course finishing in 2nd place overall!

The Competition was hard but it was fantastic to see Harry finish 4th - that was with an injured ankle that needed medical help from the on-site physio. Jude Watson was also on course for a good finish but also twisted his ankle and quite rightly had to retire from the race

The Inters also ran really well - at this meet Years 10-11 constitute Inters. They finished 2nd overall also having run 2 laps of the course - a tough 4-miles!

As you can see below the top 4 finishers ran superbly, with Ricky shining once more, and the Galvin's living up to their XC Legends billing. Jacob Jones ran as usual with grit and determination to finish as the 4th scorer. With a couple of absences from the normal team 1st place was just out of reach this time around

No photos from the course for the Inters I am afraid as I was in the Medical Unit with the two walking wounded from the earlier Juniors Race, however here is Ricky picking up his medal for finishing 2nd

The Seniors could not turn out the 4 runners needed for a team, but the Halfacre twins wanted to run and all credit to them. They both ran well as seen below

Great commitment!

Here is the entire team after the refreshments provided were eagerly consumed (as well as some of the food for parents)

And finally here is Alfie helping his big brother get to the food following his injury!
