KENNEDY CUP REPORT - Photos to follow

Cross Country
School Cross Country has continued to go from strength to strength this season and our local and national reputation has expanded. The season consists of league races and relays against Tiffin, Trinity, Oxted and Whitgift and races at some of most prestigious private schools in the country.

Juniors
The Junior Team, consisting of Year 7 and 8 runners have had a strong season with a lot of runners competing for the first time. They have consistently finished in the top 2 in League meets and the highlight was a superb 2nd place finish at the prestigious Chaterhouse Meet.
Alfie Smith from Year 7 has run consistently well alongside Freddie Georgiou and those 2 runners have regularly finished high up the field. James Parker, Ragu Arravinthan, Joseph Roberts, Alex Romanowski and Jonas Bekit have all shown massive improvement which bodes well for the future. Year 8’s Peter Edwards, Luca Gerges, Galvin Biju and Ethan Foley have all impressed this year and will look to continue their form.
The Year 7s won their age group at the Sutton Schools Championship with Alfie Smith finishing in 1st place

Can Alfie Smith he now come forward to collect the Year 7 shield on behalf of the team.

Inters
The Inters, Year 9 and 10 runners, have had a very encouraging season so far. They have won all but one of the league meets and ran well at Charterhouse. They Inters finished in 3rd place in the first round of the National Championships which was a great performance, though just failed to qualify for the Regional Finals.
Harry Smith from Year 9 has excelled this year. He has won 4 out of 5 of the League meets as well as running in several Senior Races. Jacob Jones has been the most improved runner of the season and  Gianluca Ercolano, Joe Logue, Jude Watson and Daniel Hodgson have all ran well.

Seniors
There is one word to describe the senior cross country season so far – dominant.
They have won every single league race. At the Kings Trophy, one of the biggest senior races in the South West they finished in 5th position which was a fantastic achievement.
Better was to follow at Charterhouse where a close 2nd was achieved and at Lancing when Cross Country powerhouses Sevenoaks and Harrow were beaten for John Fisher to claim 1st place.
The highlight of the season was the Haskell Cup at RGS Guildford where 3rd place was achieved in this highly competitive relay – the best result there in over a decade.
The Surrey Schools Championship saw 1st place achieved with ease.
Ricky Lutakome finished 1st in that race so can he come up and receive the shield on behalf of the team

Availability has been excellent and all runners deserve massive credit.
Ryan and Alex Galvin have finished in the top 4 at every league event. John Erne and Fabien Daburn have been consistent. Robert Spalding has recovered from injury well to return to his best form of late, and Sean McAllister, Oscar and Joseph Halfacre have shown tremendous dedication and loyalty.
The main man this season has however been Ricky Lutakome. He is 2 years younger than those he competes against and yet has has finished 1st in every league race he has run. He recorded the fastest leg at Guildford and was just 11 seconds away from a 15-year old course record at Oxted – with 2 more years yet to run it. He has serious talent and potential – watch this space!

The Athlete of the Year however goes to a runner who has not only excelled at his own age group, but who has also run with distinction in Senior races against runners 4 years older.

At the home relay at Plough Lane, he showed fantastic sportsmanship in alerting the runner in front of him that he was going the wrong way, preventing him from getting lost. He therefore gave up an opportunity to take the lead but in doing so showed the character and values that we here at John Fisher so admire.

Well done to Harry Smith - athlete of the year.

WHITGIFT RACE

The short distance to Whitgift saw a very good turnout and some excellent performances

The weather was brisk but not freezing, and the course (2k for Jnrs, 4k for Inters and Seniors) was challenging but varied.

The Juniors ran extremely well and finished in their best position for a number of races

WHITGIFT FIXTURE SATURDAY

Saturday 12th December

Whitgift League race

The last Saturday fixture of the year is a league race at Whitgift. Obviously we want to perform well at our local rivals, and with no rugby this coming weekend we can be at full strength! The race start is earlier than usual and is at 9.00 for Juniors and around 9.30 for Inters/Seniors There will be refreshments afterwards and we should be ready to leave Whitgift – in full glory hopefully – at around 11.00 As it is local, it would be helpful if you could make your own arrangements for travel to Whitgift. The school address is Haling Park, South Croydon, CR2 6YT I will however be driving a minibus from school and leaving at 8.15 sharp so the whole squad can meet outside the main school building entrance at Whitgift at 8.30 Please email me at dfell@suttonlea.org or tell me at school if you need to catch the minibus because obviously numbers are limited
Then race usually starts and finishes in the bottom fields

FURTHER LOCAL SUCCESS

Ricky leading the Senior Race on Saturday, with teammates in the following pack

Triumphant wins for the Senior and Inters teams at Oxted on a very muddy and in parts treacherous course saw the JFS runners show the guts and determination that all cross-country athletes need in abundance. The Juniors finished behind only Oxted, beating Trinity and Tiffin showing fantastic improvement from recent League results

All in all a very successful morning!

The Juniors race was a 2 mile course. Oxted is always wet and muddy, and this was no exception. The JFS runners showed superb determination to battle the elements and a tricky course involving fields and woodland.

The JFS finishing positions are as follows

Alfie Smith
5th
13.03
Peter Edwards
6th
13.46
Freddie Georgiou
8th
14.29
Galvin Biju
13th
15.17
Alex Romanowski
16th
15.59
Ethan Foley
17th
16.02

Well run to Alfie once again. Great to see Peter run such a strong race - showing his class. Freddie and Galvin ran well to complete the A team. I was very impressed with both Alex and Ethan who both ran their best races of the season, especially considering the conditions

Well done to all

The Inters ran with the Seniors, and the course was around 2.5 miles long. It was of course made more treacherous by the Juniors runners making everything even more muddy, so special praise for the runners of the second race.

We were unsure on the day how the Inters had done because it was difficult to split them from the Seniors, but sure enough they had finished in 1st place!

Many congratulations to this fabulous four for winning. Harry finished in 1st place in the Inters, but 6th place adding the Seniors as well to continue his great recent form. Jacob and Gianluca ran with gusto and a top effort from Joe Logue, still recovering from his injury lay-off who ran a great race.

The Seniors continued their amazing form with another 1,2,3,4 finish to take the plaudits and the glory but all who ran acquitted themselves with aplomb

Once again Ricky showed his class to finish impressively alone out front, but Cross Country is a team sport as well as an individual challenge and the Galvin's continued to prove their undeniable talent by taking the other medal positions, and captain Robert Spalding showed that he is well on the way back to his best form after his injury issues. Fabien - often the unsung hero of the squad - ran as well as ever and Sean McAllister rolled back the years with his time and a top ten finish. The Halfacre twins ran for Pardew as ever and their commitment and efforts cannot be understated

So a fantastic morning at Oxted, 2 victories and a 2nd place prove once more how strong Cross Country is at JFS
